Local team spotlight: EE 2010
I enjoy writing from time to time, especially when I’m feeling inspired or incredibly proud of a sports team, players, or families in our community. Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some fantastic teams in the east end of Toronto. I’ve been fortunate to work with teams from Ted Reeve, a few Bruins squads, West Hill teams, and, of course, the East Enders.
Today, I want to shine a spotlight on the East Enders 2010 team. This group is particularly special to me because I’ve had the privilege of working with them since the East York Bulldogs days, and I’ve followed their journey for the last seven years. Coached by Tanya Witty and Coach Carl (Bob Acton Sports coach), with an outstanding support staff, this team truly embodies what it means to be a successful community hockey team.
While this team has won many championships over the years, what stands out to me most is their consistency both on and off the ice, and their commitment to the community. Some teams engage in multi-sport activities, community events, or team bonding from time to time, but these have become pillars of the East Enders’ program. Along with their strong on-ice development, their dedication to team-building and community involvement has been the most impressive aspect of their development—something I haven’t seen matched in any program in the east end over the last 10 years.
This team understands the importance of staying connected away from the rink. They prioritize spending time together and giving back to the community. While hockey, like many sports, can sometimes feel like a game of luck, I truly believe that the harder you work, the luckier you get. This team definitely has some good hockey karma coming their way.
Right now, they’re facing a tough challenge against a solid Bruins team in the East City Finals, down six starting players and with three call-ups in the lineup. I’m truly amazed by the resilience this group has shown. To me, it speaks to the preparation and the culture they’ve built—a culture that wasn’t created overnight, but through years of dedication.
I want to wish Tanya and her team the best of luck on Monday. We’re all rooting for you!
